SketchUp Animation - Casting of R.C Strip Footing

Below is an animation depicting the simplified casting process of a reinforced concrete strip footing.

The model was created and animated with SketchUp, output to a series of .png and put together in VirtualDub and output as .mp4 using this hack. The animation was then imported into VSDC Free Video Editor for post-production.

Like usual I couldn't claim the construction process depicted in the animation is 100% by-the-book as there are a lot of factors affecting the construction of a certain structure on site. Constrained by small working space -- it's most certain the excavated pit on site will never be as spacious as the one shown in the animation -- sometimes it's easier to bind those base rebars into a "basket" before unloading them into their formworks. Likewise for stump reinforcement.

SketchUp Animation - "Steel Framing of a Warehouse" [Updated]

This is an animation showing a simplified process of erecting the skeleton frame of a warehouse.



I do not claim this construction sequence is 100% by-the-book as there are many factors, such as site condition, which contribute to different approach even for projects of similar nature.

Normally, a warehouse ground floor slab will be designed as pile-supported (the whole slab is cast on a pile grid of closely-spaced single pile point, for more info, refer this page). However, since it's not relevant to the subject of this animation, I don't bother to show them.

Below are a few still output of the model showing some of the structural steel connections.

Stanchion and wall girt.
Roof trusses connected to stanchion (fascia truss not shown).
Roof trusses connected to stanchion (showing fascia trusses).
Cross bracing, welded to top chord of roof trusses.
Purlin, anti-sag rod and knee bracing.

[Updates]
I've improved the above animation by removing the shadows, adding new viewing angles and incorporating a fly-through sequence at the end. It also has higher resolution now. Enjoy.

SketchUp Animation - "Casting of 1st Floor Beam and Slab" [Updated]

This is a SketchUp animation depicting a simplified process of casting upper floor R.C (reinforced concrete) beam and slab. I also animated the process of setting up formwork and falsework before laying of reinforcement and finally, concreting.



The "slab reinforcement" depicted in the animation are wire meshes. Here in Malaysia we generally refer to them as "BRC" and suffixed with a reference number, for example, "BRC A6" refers to wire mesh with 6mm diameter main (and cross) wire at a spacing of 200mm c/c.

Like usual, "section plane" has been used extensively in order to make the animation interesting. I'm considering using Proper Animation plugin to "fly" or "deliver" some of the elements if I have the time to do an "improved version" of this.

SketchUp Animation - "Erection of a Shed" [Updated]

The following is an animation depicting a simplified process of erecting a steel structure shed.



I didn't detail the process of casting the foundations (the process of which can be found here). Most of the steel members are CHS (circular hollow section) and their sizes were selected based on my drafting experience.

For a simple structure like this, structural connections are mostly welding.

SketchUp Animation - "Assembling A Shelving Unit"

This is a short clip showing how to assemble a shelf. Again, this model was created by SketchUp, animated by Propoer Animation plugin, output as still images by Smooth Step Animation plugin and put together as animation by VirtualDub.

SketchUp Animation - "Casting of a RC Pad Footing" [Updated]

Below is this blog's first animation, modeled and animated by Google SketchUp, which illustrates a simplified process of casting a reinforced concrete pad footing foundation.




In the animation, the footing reinforcement is laid in such a way to show the placement and arrangement of main (red) and transverse (green) rebar, which in technical drawings are normally depicted by lines and dots respectively (thought in the case of a square footing like this, main and transverse rebar are normally the same).


In common practice, the bar-bender will tie main and transverse rebar to form a "basket" before lower the whole thing into the pit and formwork.

I gave an outline to all elements in the model so they have better appearance. I also removed the green, red and blue from the rebar and modified some of the subtitle texts. Below is the improved version:
